Whats going on this year

So this is my blog, its going to full of information about whats going on with me as i try to make my way thorugh my final year in Nottingham. It will include details of my PRP and of my client project, but its also going to be a little bit fun!! Enjoy xx

Personal Research Project

This is an individual research project, aka - my PRP. During the course of the year i will be studying the subject of VOYOUISM. Looking into how it is used across the different mediums and how it effects our society in the way it is portrayed through the media, paying particular interest into the music video industory.

Client Project

For this i will be creating Compound. Along with my two team mates, James and Huw we will be establishing a media production company and tackling the challenges that it throws up along the way, you've guessed it, its called compound!

COMPOUND CATCH UP

WOW it has been a long time, i must have just been working so hard that ive have forgotten to write any of it down!!! well what has been happening in compound?? loads of things - mainly, making ourselfs into a real life business.

after having a review meeting it was reaslised that we could produce the media content to a professional level, but could we be operate as a business at a profesional level??? the answer was no! we had dvd's, editis, filming, graphics, 3d, but no documents to back it up or bring it together.

to solve this we went to the ntu business scholl to see phil clark, he was brillient and helped us to put togethet a documentation package for compound, including tips on how to write a brief, tender, invoice and sign off sheet.

we have also planned our final 3 projects, which aim to cover all of the areas that we have yet to cover, and some just for fun! firstly we have the audio project, second, e4 stings and finally making a set of video stings of the national alcohol awrness champaign, thirst for life, details to follow!!!

lets get back onto PRP

well, like i said, the focus has been on client project for the last few weeks, but now we have the calm after the storm and im starting again to think about PRP.

the next and final stage is the evaluation. i am having a meeting with Huw tomorrow so i will know abit more then but i had a chat with Jools a few days ago and we decided that my propype is not strong enough to send to people on its own for evaluation. this is due to it being a proptotype for my research project to you can t really send one without the other and the research part is way to big to send!

im light of this i am planning to run a focus group which includes a varirty of different people who may or may not have had a link to the resaech project already, this will be run by myself.

more details to follow!!..........

Moving COMPOUND forward

well, we had the presentation, after having a few little panic attacks during the rehersals on the day we pulled it off with perfection! the slides looked cool, all the content was covered, we had video, animation and sound, everything we could have needed! we even managed to give some good responses to Jools when he was asking us questions, which is always a bonus!

since then we have had a formative feed back meeting. this was supost to last for 20 mins, but knowing what me and huw are like there was no suprize that it ended up lasting for an hour!

The session was really helpfull but in my opion it highlighted quite a few problems that we had as a company, things that we should have realised about 6 months ago! i think that a mistake that we have made is branding compound as a company because on reflection it brings to many business factors into the equasion, which i personally would have liked to stay away from, but we have domne it noe so we will deal with it and probably come out the other side with benifits, its just going to mean putting a focus on written work rather then practical media work.

im going to look into creating a generic format for each peice of work and organise it that way, hopefull this is the easyest soilution and then we can move onto our newest challenge - creating an audio element!!!

COMPOUND presentation

to acompany the business proposal as a group we have decided to do a presentation to suporrt the document. this will be made in power point, but will also include video interviews of the group members aswell as examples of compounds work.

we filmed the video yesterday so that just needs abit og editing. i am also working on a company i-dent as a little intro sequence, ive made a compound blender!! its quite cool, but i cant for the life of me find a good sound effect!!!

looking forward to dressing up smart and showing what we are made of!!

COMPOUND business propsal

well compound is now back on track!! over christmas it became apparent that we had to create a business plan for the company and that we really needed to be spending more time on it! so i started doing some research into what a business plan should look like and the sort of things we would need to included. James was putting together some footage that we had all filmed for compound over the last few months aswell.

we made some rough drafts of the proposal but really struggeled, i guess this is why we are media students and not business students! so after about 9 solid hours at the computer we all gave it everything we had and the result was actually pretty good! we ended up having about 13 pages, Huw then made it 'look sexy' as he likes to call it! we branded the work and burnt the DVD of our work examples and thats it! proposal compleate!

PRP is FINALLY over!!!!!

so, term ended back in december and i went back to wonderfull Cambridge for christmas, was really good to be home and have a change of sceanery, even if was just the fact that i sat at a different desk to do my PRP!!

so christmas as far as PRP was concerned was all about the finishing touches. i had read all of my books, got my quotes, searched my website and it was all inside my computer, it was now time to organise it!

first of all i had to create a neavigation system, up until this point all of my work was in word files and videos just scattered around in different folders. after trying out front page and dreamweiver and flash i decided that i need something alot more basic and opted for using powerpoint. it was actually really good, it allowed me to layer up my images, create hyperlinks for my different articals and also allowed the use of video.

i also had to produce my prototype over this period. i had been collecting ideas and images throughout the project so i decided to just open up after effects and take inspiration as it came to me. i ended up creating a montage of images that related to all of the areas within voyeurism and my project, i then added some dramatic music and there it was, i had my music video. i was really pleased with the result.

so the project was finally over, i burnt it onto a DVD, had a few problems with the links, so fixed them, burnt it again and handed it in.

i thought the day would never come, but i am so so so happy with the project, looking back i have really enjoyed it and have also learnt so much, so now its onto the evaluation stage, and maybe i can reclaim some of my social life for a little while!!!

Compound Update

well, we are in businees, sold the first lot of fashion dvd's - that is a compleated project now. we had a meeting to discuss plans for over christmas, project / company roles, discussed issues involving manegement etc - all turned out ok, i think every one is abit stressed at the moment.

discussed ideas for this pitch / proposal / presentation thing what ever it is! got some cool ideas of what were going to put on the screens, but it is all very top secret!!

and finally, we all went for dinner lastnight - the compound christmas dinner! was really nice, tried not to talk about work too much, was quite relaxing really - i love those guys!! x
